LISA HARRIS is an award-winning author who has over twenty novels and novella collections in print. She and her husband, Scott, along with their three children, live near the Indian Ocean in Mozambique as missionaries. As a homeschooling mom, life can get hectic, but she sees her writing as an extension of her ministry which also includes running a non-profit organization. The ECHO Project works in southern Africa promoting Education, Compassion, Health, and Opportunity and is a way for her to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves…the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.” (Proverbs 31:8)

Welcome, Lisa! Tell us about your salvation experience.
I grew up in a Christian home and accepted Christ early in my life, but it wasn’t until I was in college that I took on my faith as truly my own. I remember realizing how my faith couldn’t be an extension of my parents’ faith, but instead a very personal decision I had to make. For me, it was a profound time spiritually and changed the course of my life.

Are you:
A spontaneous writer or a scheduled writer?
Very scheduled.

Stubborn, or compliant?
Hmmm…depends on the situation, but I probably lean toward being more compliant.

Organized or completely chaotic?
Organized (for the most part :) ).

How do you handle disasters/BIG problems? Do you have a funny or interesting story showcasing how you handle them?
And interesting question, because, living overseas has forced me to become extremely flexible, though I have to admit, it’s still not always easy. I’ve also had to learn to deal with one problem at a time and not worry about tomorrow. I love Matthew 6:34 where it says. “…do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

That’s so true, isn’t it? So while I don’t always make it, I really do try to live one day at a time, and tackle one problem at a time.

In your opinion, what is your best trait? What is your worst?
My worst- probably that I analyze things far too much.

My best trait? I always try to look at the good in the other person and assume that their motives are good as well.

Tell us something surprising about yourself that readers may not know.
I ate raw herring in Holland last fall and enjoyed it. (Really :) )

If you compared your writing style to any other Christian Fiction author, who would it be? Also, how would you rate the romance in your books?
Tough questions, as it’s hard to compare myself to another writer, because I try to be unique with my style and settings. I’d love to be compared to authors like Dee Henderson and DiAnn Mills. As for romance, my stories have always been pretty G rated.

What are you working on now or going to write next?
Our family is just now reaching the end of our furlough and will be headed back to Africa in a few days. I’ve taken off the past few months from writing because of our hectic schedule, but am already itching to get back into it. Once we are home I have a couple fiction projects I’m excited to jump into.

End-of-the-Year Celebration DAY 1!

Today, I'm featuring authors Lisa Harris, Debby Mayne, and Mary Conneally! Great group, huh?? :D Let's get started!

What is one thing or area where God has been changing you in 2010? Do you have any scriptures to go along with/support that?

Lisa: This has been good but extremely busy year. I tend to be the kind of person who wants to do everything on my own, but this year, in particular, God has stretched me far from my comfort zone. But He has also continued to remind me that even in doing things “for Him” and my family, I need to rely on His strength and never my own.

Paul speaks of this often in his letters (I guess I’m not the only one who needs to be reminded) about how God’s Spirit helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26), and it is when we are week, that through Him we are made strong. (II Corinthians 12:9) In fact, it is through our weaknesses, that Christ’s power is made greater!

Debby: The Lord is always working on me and reminding me to keep my heart and mind focused on Him. My favorite scripture verse is Psalm 51:10 because it reminds me that I’m constantly bombarded with things that aren’t pleasing to Him and that I need to pray for perpetual cleansing.

Mary: One big change is, when I read scripture now, my focus is on souls. That sounds sort of funny, I guess, but I was reading the verse where Mary is told by the angel that she’s going to have a baby and she says some version of, “No way. I can’t. I’m a virgin.” The angel comforts her and ministers to her.

Then almost within the same page, Zachariah is told his wife is going to have a baby (John the Baptist) and Zachariah responds almost word for word as Mary did. “No way. We can’t. She’s too old.”

God strikes him dumb and he can’t speak until after the baby is born.

Now why did God act so differently to the two of them? Mary and Zachariah are people of faith, clearly large enough faith that God found them worthy for a huge but difficult and miraculous blessing. Why did Mary get ministered to and Zachariah get stricken?

It comes down to what was in their hearts…their souls. Reading that, as so often happens with the Bible, I felt like it spoke to me in a new way and since then I’ve tried to read the Bible with it in the forefront of my thoughts, that God’s focus, his priority, is our souls. His ministry to us is for the purpose of our souls. God doesn’t look at a terribly sick believer and think, “Poor guy is sick, I need to heal him.” God thinks, “His soul is well, he is my blessed, healthy and whole child.”

Tell one thing that God did for you this year just to show He loved you.

Lisa: This question made me smile. This morning I was working out in the gym and was reminded of how God has shown us His love while we are home on furlough. (We are back from Africa on home leave for four months right now.) Among many of the blessings, we are in a furnished house that has a room for each of our three children. Each child has a desk where they can do school. The house is big enough for us to invite people over, and it even has a gym in the neighborhood where I can fight off the unwanted pounds of all the yummy food. And while that last one might sound funny, I’ve been worried about gaining weight while I’m back. So that’s why I was struck this morning (again) how God cares for the small things that might not be important over all, but they are things that are important to me.

Debby: He has been with me through good and bad. I’ve had incredible blessings and deep sadness, but He’s always been there for me.

Mary: He made my car start one cold day when I needed it to desperately. I really felt like it was a miracle. The car key wouldn’t turn and it had been acting up for a long time, locking in the off position and we needed a new starter and just hadn’t gotten it done yet. And that day it wouldn’t turn. I tried multiple times and it was just stopped. And I was upset because I wasn’t sure how I was going to get home. I stopped and prayed and that key just turned. It was so perfect. So much in that very instant of prayer.


What is your favorite memory from 2010?

Lisa: On our way back to the States this past September--thanks to the airline who didn’t charge us for an extended layover--we were able to spend two weeks in Europe with our kids visiting several close friends we hadn’t seen in several years. We were able to spend time in Paris, Holland, Lyon, and London. Definitely memories I will keep with me for a long time.

Debby: My favorite memories are all centered on family. My husband and I are empty-nesters, so every time we have both of my adult daughters, son-in-law, and granddaughter with us, we’re very happy.


Mary: I’ve got a one year old granddaughter so my thoughts went to her first, but I’m not sure which moment to pick. She’s such a doll baby. So I think I’ll pick the moment I won the Carol Award. I won it for Cowboy Christmas at the American Christian Fiction Writer’s conference. Janette Oke gave a speech before hand and Carol Johnson, the lady who fought hard to publish Janette’s first book, Love Comes Softly, handed me my award. It was a sweet, sweet moment.


Do you have any New Year resolutions in mind?


Lisa: Spiritually, I want to read through the Bible. Personally, I spent this year losing weight, (part of my fit at forty goal J) so next year, I want to up my strength and endurance.

Debby: I plan to worry less and enjoy all God’s blessings more. For the first time in many years, I’m not compelled to go on a diet or work harder at anything. I don’t want to stop eating healthy food or slow down my production, but I want to enjoy life more.

Mary: I quit making New Years resolutions a long time ago. I never keep them and I figure if I can’t change myself I can at least KNOW myself. So why bother making promises to myself that I’m not going to keep, huh?


What is one goal you have set (or God has put on your heart) for 2011 apart from New Year resolutions?


Lisa: A friend and I recently began a non-profit to help meet the physical needs of those we work with in Africa. Along with some of the other projects we are already involved in, including micro-loans and orphan care, God has put on my heart to help empower women living in the village with some kind of handwork that they can sell and help provide better for their families. I’ll be spending the next few months researching what will work best where we live and hope to have something going by the end of 2011. Debby: I would like to mentor other writers who have a strong desire to be published but aren’t sure what to do next.


Mary: Well, this is a little odd, but I’m going to maybe create a false identity for myself and start a second career writing romantic suspense. I’ve sold one book under a pseudonym that will be out next October and if things go as I hope it’ll be a whole parallel career path for me. I’m really interested to see if that works out. If readers want to read something by me alter ego.

My review:
This book is fast-paced, action-packed, and a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It really opens your eyes to a lot of things that most people never consider when living in our comfortable homes in our relatively safe country(s). The twists and turns of the plot were well written and kept me guessing until the very end. Those who love action, light romance, danger, and intricate plots will be sure to enjoy this book.

Welcome, Lisa! Tell us a little about yourself.

I live with my family in Mozambique where we are involved in a discipleship movement as well as some humanitarian projects. I have three kids and we’ve just started our third year of home schooling. That in itself has become a full time job, but I love being involved in their schooling. :)

We also travel a lot (which I believe is a great plus for the kids’ education) and in the past few years we have spent time living in South Africa, Brazil for language learning, and now Mozambique.

How long have you been writing? How many books do you have published?
This past weekend, as I was clearing out some file cabinets, I found some stories I’d written when I was ten or eleven, so I’ve always had the desire to write. I didn’t start seeking publication until about twelve years ago when the dream first really took hold. About six years after that, I had my first novella published and just signed my 21st contract this month!

If you compared your writing style to any other Christian Fiction author, who would it be? Also, how would you rate the romance in your books?
I don’t know if I could ever compare myself to them, but I’d love to think of Blood Ransom a combination of Dee Henderson and Terri Blackstock, equaling a strong suspense line that keeps the pages turning along with romance and a spiritual thread. All the romances I’ve had published are definitely rated G. :)

In your own words tell us a little about Blood Ransom.
Blood Ransom, like all the books in the Mission Hope Series revolves around Volunteers for Hope International, a fictional, nonprofit organization that places short-term doctors and medical teams across Africa. Natalie Sinclair and Chad Talcott, two Americans working with Volunteers for Hope, find themselves in a race against time when they stumble upon a modern-day slave trade in a blend of adventure, romance, and suspense.

What made you want to write this story?
For years, I wanted to write stories set in Africa that told about ordinary people faced with extraordinary circumstances, and in the process, to see how their lives changed through their reliance on God. Blood Ransom deals with the issue of human trafficking, and I’m currently finishing up book two in the series that is set in a refugee camp.

Another motivation is to inspire others that God can use you too! A friend and I have recently started a blog that shares stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things for God called Inspire. Be Inspired. We can’t all go to Africa, but we all can make a difference in the lives of those around us one person at a time. Stop by and share your story with us!

What research did you have to do for this book?
I had to do tons of research. :) Even though I live in Africa know a lot about the people and setting, I still had to research the medical situations, plane crashes, jungles, and political situations to make them all believable. I love research, though, and tend to spend a lot of time looking for that perfect jewel of information I want to add to the books authenticity.

Who would you pick to play the lead roles if this book was made into a movie?

I think it’s every authors dream to have their book made into a movie. Choosing who would play the lead, though, is hard. Since I think the cover looks a little bit like Penelope Cruz, I’ll choose her (I loved her in Sahara) As for the male lead… I’m still looking. :) He’s got short curly hair, clean cut, good-looking …


What are you working on now or going to write next?
I’m currently finishing up Blood Covenant, book two in this series for Zondervan about a harrowing situation in an overpopulated African refuge camp where an outbreak of measles erupts and renegade soldiers block their only way out. It will be released early next year.

Then, as soon as I send that manuscript to my editor, I’ll jump into a new romantic suspense I’ll be writing for Summerside Press called Dark Continent. It’s set both in southern Africa and New York in the early 1920’s.

Hmmm… I made my own Root beer today. :)

What is your favorite birthday memory?
The first thing that comes to mind is watching my grandmother make angel food cake then icing it with green, mint icing every year for my birthday while she was still alive. A birthday doesn't pass when I don't pull of those sweet memories of thick slices of cake and laughter.

Most treasured birthday gift?
Home made cards from my children full of drawings and poems. I'll definitely treasure them forever.

Cinderella. I've just always loved that story.

Welcome, Lisa! Tell us a little about yourself.

I live with my husband and three children in Mozambique where we are involved in a church-planting ministry. I’m also a home-schooling mom, so life is busy but good.

How long have you been writing? How many books do you have published?

I started writing just after my oldest son was born. At first, I just wanted to finish a book, but the more I wrote the more I wanted to learn about the process and actually sell a book. Twelve years later, I’ve now sold twenty books. It’s been an amazing journey.

If you compared your writing style to any other Christian Fiction author, who would it be? Also, is your writing sweet, warm, etc. (in terms of romance)?

It’s hard to compare my writing style, but with the series I’m currently working on, I’d love to be a combination of Dee Henderson and Terri Blackstock. And while Love Finds You in Revenge, Ohio is a historical, I always like to include a mystery or suspense line to my stories.

The romance in this story is strong, though it takes a while for the hero and heroine to work through the rift between them.

In your own words tell us a little about Love Finds You in Revenge, Ohio.

I always love the brainstorming process of writing a new story. I first got to know Catherine Morgan, a matriarchal figure who has spent her life taking care of her three sisters to fulfill a promise to her mother on her deathbed. She’s also a twice-jilted spinster, who’s given up on love, which I, of course, had to remedy. Once I got to know her, I added the hero, a former love interest, and a whole lot of pride and resentment to up the tension.

At 27, twice-jilted Catherine Morgan is hardly an old maid. But bound by a promise, she's determined to care for her siblings. Only Sheriff Corbin Hunter stands in her way. He's convinced that her sister's fiancé is a notorious bank robber. Can she save her sister's heart without losing hers to Corbin---who dropped her years ago?

What made you want to write this story?

Originally, I was interested in using a storyline that included a young woman who worked as one of the first telephone operators in the late 1800’s. In small towns, these women often knew everything that was going on, shared recipes and weather reports, or simply chatted. What would happen, though, if they overheard something they shouldn’t have. . .like plans for murder. I took this idea as a jumping off place, added the thread of revenge, and the story began to unfold.

What research did you have to do for this book?

I literally spent hours and hours researching for this story. Living overseas can be a challenge when it comes to visiting a setting, as I know some of the other authors of this line were privileged to do. And while there is little information on the now ghost town of Revenge, I’m thankful for the Internet that allows me to research to my hearts content.

Who would you pick to play the lead roles if this book was made into a movie?

I was recently asked this question and chose Ashley Judd to play Catherine in a movie because she has the same determined tilt of her chin that I see Catherine having. And how about Benjamin Browder from Star Gate as my hero, because I think he’d make a great-looking, nineteenth century sheriff. :)

What are you working on now or going to write next?

I’m currently writing an international suspense series for Zondervan.

Scared by Tom Davis. It’s a contemporary novel set in Swaziland.

In spite of the fact that I’ve traveled all over the world, I really don’t like to fly. At all.
 
If you could be any animal, which would you choose? Why?
I guess a leopard, because I saw my first one in the wild this year and it was graceful and so beautiful.

We don’t have television in Africa, so I don’t even know what shows are on anymore.  And while I don’t watch many movies either, I do enjoy old classics and a good romantic comedy or suspense, and some sci-fi series.
Place to go on vacation?
I love spending time in the Africa bush on safari. We live close to Kruger National Park and it’s become my favorite quiet retreat because of all the incredible wildlife there.
Book this year (or month if you’ve read too many to remember)? Why?
I’d have to say the Shape of Mercy by Susan Meissner. I loved the combination of historical and contemporary and how she brought to life young Mercy through the pages of a diary.
